Kruger sightings: 1 - 6 February 2012
After a week off & another cooking while Jonathan was off, Kylie is excited to be back on the road! She says:
“The bush has not disappointed me, in fact its welcomed me back with open arms!
We have seen plenty of the usual plains game - zebra with foals, impala herds, wildebeest and lots of giraffe as well as having a lot of fun watching the antics that the vervet monkeys and baboons have been getting up to. The new babies are old enough now to join in with the trouble making but they still don’t quite have stable legs so its very entertaining!
We have also been lucky enough to see the ‘big 5′ a few times over, with 2 groups of 8 white rhino, a black rhino and her calf, mating lions, elephants having mud baths, a leopard getting away from the heat of the day lying in a tree, and a huge herd of buffalo with lots of babies.
The guests leaving on the 4th were extremely lucky on their way out, first seeing lions up a tree and then a little further down the road they came across a cheetah in a tree surveying the area. Very unusual sightings as both those cats are not made to climb trees!!!
The birding has also been phenomenal of late. We’ve seen a lot of violet-backed starlings, purple crested turacos, violet-eared waxbills, white-breasted sunbirds and 4 of the kingfisher species (woodlands, pied, giant, and malachite). The raptors are also very active. We’ve been seeing black-shouldered kites, bataleurs, wahlbergs eagles (including the pale morph again), white backed vultures, lappet faced vultures and a lot of amur falcons.
Even our transfers between Johannesburg and the Kruger Park are exciting! Moss and his guests were surrounded by a herd of about 50 buffalo!
