Kruger sightings: 25 - 29 February 2012

The sightings have been unbelievable lately with us missing almost nothing!

Once again have been spoilt with the ‘big 5′, some even seeing leopard several times! We have had 9 lions on a giraffe kill, a very lucky but grumpy male lion with 3 females and 2 males that walked 2 meters away from our vehicle and decided our shade was where they were going to lie down! We’ve also had some very entertaining elephant sightings with them coming right up to the vehicle and playing with the bull bar. One was so close to a guests on the backseat that he could of put his hand out and touched his head.

Our safari guests have once more been spoiled having seen the big 5 several times, including black rhinos, mating lions, a baby elephant only a few days old and a female leopard with 2 cubs.

Also seen a lot of hippos out of the water, some small baby crocodiles, a serval, wild dogs that had just finished a kill, a lot of monitor lizards and some hyenas.

Birds wise, wooly-necked storks, wahlbergs eagles, giant kingfishers, southern ground hornbills including a chick in a nest calling for mom, pin tailed whydahs, bru-bru, fish eagles and sombre greenbuls.

Our luck has continued over the last couple of days with absolutely unbelievable sightings! The heat has been almost unbearable making the afternoons a little quieter, but all the early mornings have been paying off!

We have seen the ‘big 5′ many times over, a lot of plains game, beautiful birds and even the reptiles and insects have been keeping us busy!

The past week in Kruger really exceeded our expectations! Not only were our guests very lucky in their sightings, but the animals played along to show the agents who joined our educational safari a good time too!

Our agents started off with a night at Outlook Lodge and being in a quiet gated community in Benoni & right next to a golf course, it set the tone for a good safari, with around 10 different species of bird counted just during breakfast, including the stunning paradise flycatcher!

After a week off & another cooking while Jonathan was off, Kylie is excited to be back on the road! She says:

“The bush has not disappointed me, in fact its welcomed me back with open arms!

We have seen plenty of the usual plains game - zebra with foals, impala herds, wildebeest and lots of giraffe as well as having a lot of fun watching the antics that the vervet monkeys and baboons have been getting up to. The new babies are old enough now to join in with the trouble making but they still don’t quite have stable legs so its very entertaining!
