Kruger National Park sightings 20/01/2011

Friday, January 21st, 2011

Yesterday some banded mongoose arrived in camp (Skukuza) with their new babies, on the drive we saw amongst others, two ostrich and a big bull elephant shaking a marula tree for the fruit.

Banded mongoose (Mungos mungo) live in groups up to about 30 animals who sleep together, usually in holes in termite mounds. They come out around sunrise and bask to warm themselves up before the alpha female and her mate lead them off to forage, either as one pack or in smaller groups. Depending on how good the hunting is, a banded mongoose troop may travel from 2 - 10 km in a day. Insects make up most of a banded mongoose’s diet, with lesser quantities of other arthropods and small vertebrates. They also eat fruit, berries, eggs and carrion.
